In 1998, casting director Jennifer Starr, who was in Nantucket looking for new faces for a Tommy Hilfiger campaign, saw Welling working as a construction worker and suggested he try modeling.

Up until 2000, when he moved to Los Angeles, Welling worked as a model for the Louisa Modeling Agency.
